This is the moment.

This was the turn. This was when everything fell apart and into place at the same time. Let’s take a step back, shall we? I know it’s hard, but don’t think of her as “Regina” or “The Evil Queen”. Right here, at the very first part of this gif, she’s just a girl. She’s not a young girl, but a girl nonetheless. She’s been under her parent’s care, controlled and emotionally battered by her mother, and lovingly doted upon by her father. Not too long ago, she had witnessed her true love murdered by her own mother, right in front of her eyes. She cried. She held and kissed him. The importance placed on true love in this show is never underestimated, and that should be the same case here. If gaining one’s true love creates happiness, then losing them creates great darkness. Then she finds out that this little girl that she saved, the girl she is going to have to spend the rest of her life mothering, is responsible for her mother finding out about her romance. Ok, lots of people say that Regina’s hate was misdirected, and to a degree it is. On the other hand, It wasn’t like Snow just let it slip on accident. It was calculated. Did you see her face? She was thinking about it the whole time. She took it into her hands to disobey her stepmother-to-be, the woman who saved her life, who basically taught her what she knows about ‘true love’. Yeah yeah yeah, little kids can’t keep secrets and all that jazz, ok, that’s all true. However, could you imagine what you might feel in that moment? Would you be able to brush it off? Would you be able to love and care for them knowing that they are even partially responsible for taking away the only thing in your life that made you truly happy? To be perfectly honest, I don’t think I could…and that’s what we see now. The woman you see here just made a transformation from mourning girl into a woman scorned. She has literally nothing left to lose. She hates her murderous mother, her father can’t do much for her now, he doesn’t love the man she’s about to marry, she has to live with him and his daughter who is (at least partially) responsible for the death of her true love. Then Snow grows up. Snow escapes her clutches on more than one occasion, and then she ends up getting to be with her true love, who we know to be a commoner. I don’t know if Regina knows that bit, but it’s possible, and that must be absolutely wretched. Snow isn’t just a little girl who slipped up. To Regina, she is the symbol of everything that is wrong with her life. It knocks the air from her lungs. It strips the light from her life. It turns this lovesick girl, into an Evil Queen.
